LINEN MANAGEMENT Flashcards
The total number of yarns per square inch of fabric
Thread count
A high thread count often indicates?
finer yarns
The best thread count for sheets/The best cotton bed sheets often have thread counts between?
300 & 500
When to pay attention to thread count
The only time thread count matters is for ____ with ____
100% cotton sheets with single-ply weaves
When to ignore thread count?
If the sheets aren’t 100% cotton with single-ply weaves
A two-ply yarn means a thread is made up of 2 smaller strands that have been twisted together
Multiple-ply yarns
Manufactured in a factory and can be produced to be super thin, meaning these often have thread counts in the thousands
Polyester/Cotton blends
These fibers use plants as the raw material, but are chemically processed into semi-synthetic fibers. Similar to polyester and aren’t comparable to cotton
Rayon (viscose,lyocell and modal)
These are natural fibers but can’t have thread counts that are comparable to cotton
Linen and Silk
Linen is thick, so thread count is low. Silk is so thin, it’s typically measured by fabric weight
These sheet fabrics are oftern made with cotton, but you likely won’t come across thread counts for them because of their construction
Flannel & knit fabrics
A satin weave that feels soft and smooth because it has yarns in one direction that float over several yarns in the opposite direction
Sateen
because of its grid-like weave, percfale tends to have a lower thread count than sateen
Made with continuous loops instead of weaves
jersey-knit sheets
Most popular sheet fabric
100% cotton/Egyptian cotton sheets
Cost less and are more durable and wrinkle-resistant, but they may not feel as natural
Cotton/Polyster blends
Brand name for lyocell and modal
Tencel
The umbrella term for ____ fibers, including viscose, lyocell and modal
“regenerated cellulose”
Basic, grid-like weave that feels light and crisp
Percale
