Linear Motion Flashcards
Linear Motion Definition
Motion in a straight line with all body parts moving at the same distance in the same direction. Results from a direct force being applied to the center of the object’s mass
Linear Motion Key Descriptors
Distance, Displacement, Velocity, Speed, Acceleration, Deceleration
Linear Motion Measurements
Scalar and Vector Quantities
Scalar Quantities Definition
Described in terms of Size or Magnitude
Scalar Quantities
Mass, Inertia, Distance, and Speed
Vector Quantities Definition
Described in terms of size and direction
Vector Quantities
Weight, acceleration, deceleration, displacement, momentum, velocity
Distance and Displacement
- Vector Quantities
- Describe the body’s motion
Distance Definition
The length of the path a body follows when moving to a point
ex. 400m Runner
Displacement Definition
The length of a straight line joining the start and finish points
ex. 200m race on a track, the displacement will be the number of meters from start to finish (across the field)
Speed Definition
- Scalar quantity (does not consider direction)
- The rate of change of position
- Speed= Distance covered/ time taken (s)
Velocity
- Vector Quantity
- The rate of change of position with reference to the direction
- Velocity=Displacement/Time Taken
Acceleration and Deceleration
- Vector Quantities
- The rate of change of velocity
Velocity and Deceleration and Acceleration
Acceleration occurs when velocity increase
Deceleration occurs when velocity decreases
