Linear Kinematics Flashcards
Linear speed is represented by what symbol?
s
What is the formula for linear speed?
s = l (distance)/ change in time
What type of a variable to linear speed?
Scalar (magnitude only)
What are the SI units for linear speed?
m/s
What is linear velocity represented by?
v
Formula for v
v = displacement (change in d)/ change in time
What are the SI units for linear velocity?
m/s
What type of variable is linear velocity?
Vector (has magnitude and direction)
Linear acceleration
- Represented by letter ‘a’
- The rate of change in velocity
What type of variable is linear acceleration?
Vector variable (has magnitude and direction)
What are the SI units for acceleration?
m/s^2
What is the formula for a?
a = change in velocity/ change in time
How does acceleration relate to sprinting performance?
We talked about speed, but we don’t know if the sprinter was faster at some points and slower at other points. With acceleration we can determine if someone is speeding up, slowing down, starting, or stopping.
How do we measure basic linear kinematics of a sprinting performance using video analysis?
- You can measure distance/displace, speed/velocity, or acceleration using video analysis
- We can use infrared timing gates, photo finish, or stop watches
Infrared Timing Gates
One side has an LED that emits a beam of infrared light while the other side has a detector that see infrared light.
-The human eye can’t detect infrared light. However, the electronic detector senses when anything blocks the light beam. This is how the timer is started and stopped.
