Q

How does acceleration relate to sprinting performance?

A

We talked about speed, but we don’t know if the sprinter was faster at some points and slower at other points. With acceleration we can determine if someone is speeding up, slowing down, starting, or stopping.

Q

How do we measure basic linear kinematics of a sprinting performance using video analysis?

A
  • You can measure distance/displace, speed/velocity, or acceleration using video analysis
  • We can use infrared timing gates, photo finish, or stop watches

Q

Infrared Timing Gates

A

One side has an LED that emits a beam of infrared light while the other side has a detector that see infrared light.

-The human eye can’t detect infrared light. However, the electronic detector senses when anything blocks the light beam. This is how the timer is started and stopped.

What are the three types of inertial Measurement Units (IMU)

A
  1. Accelerometer
    - Measure linear acceleration
  2. Gyroscope
    - Measures angular velocity
  3. Magnetometer
    - Measures magnetic field strength
