Linear Inequation Flashcards
Inequation
Statement including variable(s) and the sign of inequality.
Closed interval :
If a and b are 2 real numbers such that a < b,
The closed interval is the set of all the real numbers x such that
a <= x <= b
Open interval
If a and b are 2 real numbers such that a < b,
The set of all real numbers x such that a < x < b is called an open interval.
Closed interval is denoted by
[a, b] or
Open interval is denoted by
(a,b)
Semi closed or Semi open interval
Let a and b are 2 real numbers such that a < b.
Then the sets
(a,b] : a < x <= b
[a,b) : a <= x < b
are called semi open or semi closed sets.
The sign in an inequality reverses when multiplied or divided by a
Negative number.
Let A and B be 2 sets, then A ∪ B denotes
Union of sets A and B.
It is the set of all elements either in A or in B or in both A and B.
Let A and B be 2 sets, then A ∩ B denotes
Intersection of sets A and B.
It is the set of all elements common to both A and B.
Empty set
A set with no elements is called empty set.
Empty set denoted by
φ or { }
Eg of empty set
Set of all natural numbers less than 1
Set of all monkeys with 2 tails
Etc.
Distance between 2 real numbers x and y is defined as :
|x-y|
When a > b , 1/a ….. 1/b
1/a < 1/b
