Lincosamides Flashcards
1
Q
How do the Lincosamides work?
A
Bacteriostatic
Inhibition of protein synthesis
-50S ribosomal subunits of sensitive bacteria

What is the one Lincosamide?
A
Clindamycin
3
Q
What are the characteristics of Clindamycin?
A
- Effective orally or intravenously
- Can take with food
- Good tissue penetration
- Good penetration into abscesses
- Short half-life
4
Q
What does Clindamycin kill?
A
Streptococci Staphylococci Pneumococci Bacteroides Anaerobes both gram-positive and gram-negative
5
Q
What are the types of Lincosamide resistance?
A
- Ribosomal receptor site mutation
- Methylase modification of receptor
- Enzymatic deactivation
6
Q
What are the Lincosamide side effects?
A
- Skin rashes
- Liver: Increased AST, ALT
- Gastrointestinal
- Diarrhea, nausea
- Pseudomembranous colitis risk
- Clostridium difficile (1st drug associated with Antibiotic associated collitis = AAC)
7
Q
What is Clindamycin used for?
A
- Treatment of susceptible bacterial infections, mainly those caused by anaerobes, streptococci, pneumococci, and staphylococci; pelvic inflammatory disease (I.V.)
- Skin and soft tissue (MRSA, acne vulgaris)
- Lung abscesses and anaerobic lung and pleural space

Q
Prescription for Clindamycin?
A
300 to 450 mg oral every eight (8) hours for 5-10 days
Hospitalized PID: 900 mg Clindamycin & Gentamycin
Osteomylitis, MRSA: 600 mg IV to PO, 8 weeks minimum
