Limiting Reactants Flashcards
1
Q
What is a limiting reactant
A
A reactant that gets completely used up in a reaction before the rest, then the reaction will stop
Limits the amount of product that’s formed
2
Q
What happens to the reaction when one of the reactants are used up
A
It stops
3
Q
What is the relationship between the amount of product formed to the amount of limiting reactant
A
Directly proportional
If you halve the amount of limiting reactant, the amount of product formed will also halve
4
Q
How can you work out the mass of a product formed in a reaction
A
By using he mass of the limiting reactant and the balanced equation
- Write the balanced equation
- Work out the sum of RFM of the reactant and product
- Use the balanced equation to work out how many moles there’ll be of the other substance, that’s how many moles of product will be made of that many reactant
- Use the number of moles to calculate the mass
