Limiting Reactants Flashcards

1
Q

What is a limiting reactant

A

A reactant that gets completely used up in a reaction before the rest, then the reaction will stop

Q

What is the relationship between the amount of product formed to the amount of limiting reactant

A

Directly proportional

If you halve the amount of limiting reactant, the amount of product formed will also halve

Q

How can you work out the mass of a product formed in a reaction

A

By using he mass of the limiting reactant and the balanced equation

  1. Write the balanced equation
  2. Work out the sum of RFM of the reactant and product
  3. Use the balanced equation to work out how many moles there’ll be of the other substance, that’s how many moles of product will be made of that many reactant
  4. Use the number of moles to calculate the mass
