Conservation Of Mass Flashcards
1
Q
What happens to mass in a chemical reaction
A
Always conserved
Never lost or gained
2
Q
How do you show that mass is conserved mathematically
A
Adding up the relative formula masses of the substances on each side of a balanced symbol equation
3
Q
What are the two possible explanations if there is a change in the mass
A
- If the mass increases, it’s probably because one of the reactants is a gas found in the air (oxygen)
- Is the mass decreases, it’s probably because one of the products is a gas
4
Q
What will happen if the reaction vessel isn’t sealed
A
The gas expands out because from the particle theory we know that gas will expand
