Limestone And Its Uses Flashcards
What is the symbol equation for calcium carbonate?
CaCO3 ( small 3 )
What is limestone mainly made up of?
Calcium carbonate
When calcium hydroxide reacts with carbon dioxide what does it produce?
Calcium carbonate
What are the ingredients of concrete?
Cement, sand, water and crushed rock
If a metal is below Carbon how is it extracted?
By heating with a carbon in a blast furnace.
If a metal is above Carbon how is it extracted?
Because these metals have a high reactivity they are extracted using electrolysis.
How are low reactivity metals ( eg. silver, gold, platinum) extracted?
They don’t need to be extracted because they are so un-reactive you find them in their NATIVE STATE, on their own not in an ore.
What is a metal ore?
A rock containing enough metal to make it economically viable to extract.
What is the ‘native state’?
When an unreactive metal is found in its metal form in the ground.
How is cement made?
By heating limestone with clay in a kiln.
How is glass made?
By heating limestone, sand and sodium carbonate at a very high temperature.
How is concrete made?
By mixing crushed rocks (aggregate), cement and sand with water and in a slow chemical reaction it turns into concrete.
Why do metals such as: zinc, iron and lead need to be extracted in a chemical reaction?
Because they are reactive so they combine with oxygen in compounds.
When the chemical reaction takes play the metal oxides are reduced and oxygen is removed from the compound.n
What happens when you heAt calcium carbonate?
It turns into
Calcium oxide + carbon dioxide
What is the order of the limestone cycle ( give the Limey names)
Limestone - Quick lime - Slaked lime - Limewater
