Crude Oil And Fuels Flashcards
How many bonds does carbon always need to have?
4
What is the difference between the AlkAnes and the AlkEnes ?
Alkanes are SATURATED hydrocarbons because the molecule only contains single bonds.
Alkenes are UNSATURATED hydrocarbons because the molecules contains double bonds. This is between to carbon atoms.
Do Alkanes have single or double bonds?
SINGLE
Do Alkenes have double or single bonds?
Double bonds as they are unsaturated.
What is the most important thing when identifying hydrocarbons?
That they are HYDROCARBONS.
How can you test to see if a compound is an Alkane/ an alkene?
Using bromine water as a test because in the presence of a double bond ( alkene)
How can crude oil be separated?
Fractional distillation - the oil is evaporated and the hydrocarbon chains of different lengths condense at different temperatures.

What is a hydrocarbon?
