Limestone Flashcards
What is thermal decomposition?
Thermal decomposition is when one substance is heated and chemically changes into at least two new substances.
What is limestone mainly made of?
Calcium carbonate
Calcium hydroxide is an alkali which can be used to do what?
Neutralise acidic soil in fields.
What is the test for carbon dioxide?
If you make a solution of carbon hydroxide in water (limewater) and bubble gas through it, the solution will turn cloudy if there is carbon dioxide gas in it.
How do you make cement?
Powdered limestone is heated in a kiln with powdered clay to make cement
How do you make mortar?
Cement can be mixed with sand and water to make mortar.( mortar is used to stick bricks together)
How do you make concrete?
Mix cement with sand and aggregate(water and gravel) to make concrete
What are some of the uses of limestone?
Building material
Cement
Mortar
Concrete
Name three disadvantages of quarrying limestone
Ruins habitats
Lorries need to transport the limestone so causes noise and pollution
Creates dust, worsens people’s asthma
Name some advantages of quarrying limestone
Creates jobs Cheaper than marble or granite Limestone doesn't rot when it gets wet Fire resistant Brings more money into the local economy Neutralises acidic soil Once quarrying is completed, restoration of the area is normally required turning it back into a habitat for wildlife
