Limestone Flashcards
Formation and structure of Carboniferous limestone.
Scenery known as karst. It is a hard grey sedimentary rock which was laid down in layers on the sea bed. It is pervious.
What does limestone consist of? What type of rock is it?
Calcium carbonate and sedimentary rock.
What are dry valleys?
They are evidence that rivers once flowed in top of limestone. It occurred when the ground was frozen and acted as impermeable rock. They are usually very steep sided.
Stalagmites, stalactites and pillars.
The water that drips from the ceilings of underground caves evaporates to from stalactites on the ceilings. When the water drips on the floor the calcium carbonate deposits create stalagmites. Pillars are when stalagmites and stalactites join together.
