Limbus Flashcards
What is Limbus
Narrow ring of tissue located at border between cornea and conjunctiva.
Differs from conjunctiva as doesn’t have goblet cells. Differs from corneal epithelium as contains langerhans cells, melanocytes, and blood vessels.
At the limbus corneal epithelium becomes bulbar conjunctiva
Limbal Stem Cells
Limbus is charcterised by the Palisades of Vogt where clusters of imbalance stem cells are located. LSC are required for maintenance of corneal epithelium throughout life so is essential for maintaining corneal transparency and vision. Are undifferentiated stem cells with a high proliferative potential. Also functions as a barrier protecting conjunctiva and its blood vessels.
Limbal Vasculature
Limbal stroma- innermost region of limbus rich in blood vessels and lymph vessels. supplies blood and oxygen to conjunctiva and peripheral cornea. Vasculature allows for drainage of blood from anterior eye including anterior chamber.
