limba Flashcards
What are the 3 types of somatosensation?
Cutaneous sensation
Proprioception
Interoception
What is cutaneous sensation?
Sensation through the skin
What is proprioception?
The body’s ability to perceive its own movement and position in space
Receptors in joints, tendons and muscles tell us about body/limb movements, posture
What is interoception?
Sense providing information about internal condition of the body
What are the functions of somatosensation?
Haptics: exploring the external world
Emotional/affective touch
Body/self sensing: perceiving ourselves in the world
How does somatosensory information enter the CNS?
Through cranial and spinal nerves
Each spinal nerve innervates a dermatome
Dermatomes are limited in the body and overlap with each other
The pain pathway
Painful stimuli reaches not just the somatosensory cortex but also parts of the limbic system
These limbic areas: include amygdala, hippocampus, hypothalamus and cingulate cortex
Related to emotion
Damage to cingluate cortex - you will feel pain but not distress
What is cortical homunculus?
A distorted representation of the human body
What are chemoreceptors?
They signal presence of certain chemicals
There are several chemosensory systems:
- taste
- olfaction
- interoceptive chemoreception
Tongue
Tate buds are concentrated on the tongue’s:
- edges
- tip
- back
The middle of the tongue is relatively insensitive to taste
What is olfaction?
The sense of smell
Orthonasal vs retronasal olfaction
Orthonasal olfaction:
- detection of odourants through sniffing
Retronasal olfaction:
- detection of odourants we breather out through the nose from our mouth
