Diagetic lighting
When the SOURCE of the light is part of the character’s world
Diagetic lighting originates within the world of the story - e.g. light from a table lamp
Transitions - CROSSFADE
One lighting state FADES into the next
Transitions - SNAP
Opposite of a fade
Where one lighting state moves IMMEDIATELY into the next
Spotlight
Has a hard edged effect, used to light characters or elements on the stage
Fresnel
Used for a softer edged effect, with a diffusing lens in front of the lamp.
It’s useful for good overall light when used with others
Flood light
Produces a clear wide-angled lights, but there is little control over the spread of light
Strobe light
Flashing lights, used for special effects - it’s often used to give the effect of old movies
Texture - GOBO
Lights can be used to create different textures on stage
e.g. a gobo can create the effect of light through trees, which can provide the stage with an interesting and meaningful texture
Coloured gels
Can be used for spotlights, floodlights, fresnels - they add colour to the light
Par Can Light
Generates a highly directional light beam - used for illuminating, a single person or event
Blinder lights
They have the ability to functionally blind the audience to what’s happening on stage.
However, they can also simply illuminate the area where the audience is, ensuring the surrounding space is bright when needed, such as during seating period
Moving lights
They are super sophisticated machines that are controlled with a joystick like you’re on a fighter pilot.
They also offer colour changing, focus controls, and motorised shutters.

They are lights with different colours that can be used to create mood and atmosphere
