Lighting Flashcards
List four factors that modern lighting design needs to consider
Social, Health, Well Being, Sustainability, Physical effects of lighting must be considered
Explain what Lux and Lumen are used to measure
Lux: A measure of intensity, as perceived by the human eye, of light that hits or passes through a surface
Lumen: Measure of the amount of light produced. The more lumens, the brighter a light
Interior lighting design requires a holistic strategy from the outset. List four of the fundamental questions that need to be addressed
What do you want to see?
What do you not want to see?
What is the function of the space?
What is the proposed architectural style?
What is the budget?
Other than the Building Code what lighting design suite of standards are used within New Zealand for interior lighting design and what other country shares the same standard
AS/NZS 1680
List in the correct order the wattage used from highest to lowest the four following lamps that each provide approximately 600lumens of light
Fluorescent, LED, MR16 Halogen and Metal Halide.
- MR16 Halogen (50 Watt)
- Metal Halide (20 Watt)
- Fluorescent (10 Watt)
- LED (8.5 Watt)
Explain how Light Shelves assist with daylighting (4 marks) Diagrams should be included with your answer
- Reduce glare by blocking view of the bright sky
- Wash ceiling with daylight creating a more even distribution of daylight
- If extended past outside window, they act as shading devices - brise solei - blocking glare and direct sunlight
DIAGRAM of winter and summer sun + reflection onto ceiling
Explain how one buildings proximity to another effects the available daylight. A diagram can be used to assist your explanation
Average Exterior Obstruction Angle can be altered, effecting the ability to achieve minimal 30 lux at floor level 75% of a standard year.
What guide was introduced to control external light pollution and explain why this is important.
Light pollution occurs when outdoor lighting is misdirected, misplaced, unshielded, excessive or unnecessary. Light is spilled unnecessarily upwards and outward causing glare, light trespass and nighttime sky glow.
CIBSE LG3?
AS/NZS 4282:2019
- Conserve Natural Resources
- Reduce Night Glow (visual pollution)
- Protect Ecology of Floura and Fauna
It is important as unused external light creates light waste, hinders the ability to see the stars, and has negative effects on trees and bird migration.
FIND ANSWER
What measure of protection is used to define the sealing effectiveness for external luminaires and what is the highest rating possible.
IP Ratings (ingress protection): Used to define levels of sealing effectiveness of electrical enclosures against intrusion from foreign bodies: tools, direct and moisture.
Highest rating : IP 68 (table in slides)
What are the Building Code Clauses F6 for? and what is building code F8 for?
F6 - Visibility in escape routes
58 - Signs
Who invented the electric lamp and in what year?
Thomas Eddison, 1880
What is the building code clause for Artificial Light?
Clause G8
Objective: to safeguard people from injury due to inadequate lighting
Function: All spaces to be provided with light
Performance: Illuminance at floor level no less than 20 Lux
What guide was introduced to control external light pollution and explain why this is important?
AS/NZS 4282:2019
- Glare (hard to see/safety hazard), light trespass (into homes) and night glow (wasted energy)
- Artificial night lighting disrupts migrating, feeding, and breeding habits of wildlife
What unit of measurement is used to measured light falling on a surface? Lumen, Lux or Watt?
Lux: Measure of the intensity of light that hits or passes through a surface
What design suite of standards are used within NZ for street lighting design?
AS/NZS 1158 section 3 & 10
