Lighting Flashcards
What are the lighting measurements we use?
Lumens (or Lux): Measures perceived power of light, the amount of visible light that actually falls on a given surface
Footcandle: Measurement of illumination or light density
1 FOOTCANDLE = LIGHT INTENSITY OF 1 LUMAN/SQ FT
What does Correlated Color Temperature [CCT] vs Color Rendition Index [CRI]
CCT measures kelvin temperature (warm to cold)
while CRI measures the ability of light to reproduce the colors of objects faithfully

Restaurants
Hotel Lobbies
Boutiques

Hospitals
What is an appropriate application of Daylight Lighting 5000K
Galleries
Museums
Jewelry stores
Medical examination areas
Printing companies
Define Strike Time
The amount of time it takes once turning on a switch for the lamp to reach full brightness
Street Lights with mercury vapor can take up to 15 minutes
How does incandescent lighting work?
Electric current runs through the base into the filament
The filament heats up and turns into incandescence producing light
Give a benefit of incandescent lighting
Easily Dimmable
Low initial cost
What does the number following the T for Fluorescent Light Tubes mean?
EX. T5, T8, T12
The diameter of the lamp in 1/8’’
What does a Ballast do?
Ballast act as a mini transformer in the lighting circuit
They can be integrated into the lamps
-Gives off heat
-Make noise (older ones)
-Does not dim well
- Older ballast can cause low power factors
Give some examples of Electric discharge lighting
High intensity discharge lamps (HID)
Mercury Vapor HID lamps
Metal Halide HID lamps
How do we remove heat from a LED?
Using a heat sink to absorb and dissipate heat
What are Efficacy and Light Efficacy
The capacity to produce an effect
Light Efficacy: How well a light source produces light
Describe Light Schemes: Task Lighting
Specific Lighting on a work surface
Ex.
-Desk lamp
-In a dim restaurant, task lights that are positioned over each table
-Light at lavatory (i.e sink) in guest bathroom
