Light Waves Flashcards
What does Ionization mean?
The process where atoms/molecules accquire a positive/negative charge by gaining or losing electron(s).
What happens when something Emits?
When something emits it gives off or discharges, (Eg: elements releasing different photons of colour as their atoms return to their lower energy levels)
What happens when something Absorbs? (Wave)
The energy of a wave is transferred to the matter that it passes through.
What happens when something Reflects?
The waves encounter a surface that doesn’t absorb the energy of the radiation, thus bouncing the waves away from the surface.
Define Refraction
Refraction is the bending of light (or any wave) when it travels from one material to another.
What are the 2 properties that angle of reflection have compared to incidence?
Increases when Incidence increases. (Directly proportional)
Angle of reflection is equal to incidence.
(The angle of refraction can change depending on the density of the material. eg: glass, plastic, and water.)
Properties of Electromagnetic Waves:
Travel at the speed of light,
Are transverse waves,
Transfer energy,
Can be reflected/refracted.
