light independent reaction 11.3 Flashcards
where does the light independent reaction take place?
stroma of the chloroplasts
what is the first stage of the Calvin cycle?
carbon dioxide from the atmosphere diffuses into the leaf through the stomata and dissolves into water around the walls of the cells mesophyll cells. it then diffuses through the cell surface membrane, cytoplasm and chloroplasts into the stroma.
what is the second stage of the calvin cycle
the CO2 reacts with ribulose biphosphate (RuBP) which is catalysed by the enzyme rubisco.
what is the 3rd stage of the calvin cycle
2 3-carbon molecules are created from the RuBP and CO2 called glycerate 3-phosphate (GP)
what is the 4th step of the calvin cycle?
Reduced NADP from the light independent reaction reduces GP to triose phosphate (TP) using energy supplied by ATP.
what is the 5th step of the calvin cycle
the NADP from the reaction is recycled into the light dependent reaction.
what is he 6th step of the calvin cycle?
some TP is converted to organic molecules the plants require such as; starch cellulose lipids glucose amino acids and nucleotides

what is the 7th step of the calvin cycle?
TP is used to regenerate RuBP using ATP from the light dependent reaction.
what are 3 ways the chloroplast is adapted to carrying out the light-independent reaction of photosynthesis.
fluid of the stroma contains all the enzymes necessary to carry out the light dependent reaction
Stroma fluid surrounds the grana and so the products of the light dependent reaction can readily diffuse into the stroma
contains both DNA and ribosomes to manufacture proteins involved.
