glyocolysis 12.1 Flashcards
what are the 4 stages of aerobic respirations
glycolysis, link reaction, krebs cycle, oxidative phosphorylation
what happens during glycolyisis
a 6-carbon (glucose) molecule is split into two 3-carbon molecules called pyruvate
what are the 4 stages of glycolysis?
phosphorylation of glucose to glucose phosphate,
splitting of the phosphorylated glucose,
oxidation of triose phosphate,
production of ATP.
what happens during the phosphorylation of glucose to glucose phosphate?
2 phosphate molecules are added to the glucose to make it more reactive
where do the phosphate molecules come from for phosphorylation?
hydrolysis of 2 ATP molecules
what happens during the oxidation of triose phosphate?
hydrogen is removed from each of the triose phosphate molecules and transferred to NAD.
How does the production of ATP occur in glycolysis?
enzyme controlled reactions convert each triose phosphate into pyruvate and in turn convert 2 ADP to ATP
what is the overall yield of glycolysis
2 ATP molecules
2 Reduced NAD
2 pyruvate
