2
Q

Alt/gen

A

Located on engine and mechanically driven
Alt= stationary conductor (stator) rotating magnet(rotor)

Both produce ac
Alt gets to dc using rectifier
Gen uses split rings and commutator or rectifier

AC DC rectification

A

Silicone diodes in static circuit
Electrical one way valve switches and combines ac to dc

Q

Brushless alternator principles

A

Removes need for slip rings and brushes to provide initial energy
Instead uses exciter( generator type coil that creates a field for rotor to gain electricity)

Q

Field relay and reverse current

A

Protect against battery discharging itself into alt or gen when output is low
Field relay for alt

Q

Current limiter

A

Prevent alternator or generator from producing more current than they are rated for
Adjusts field current by placing variable resistance in the field circuit

Q

GPUs

A

Apu: for starting or running systems on ground
Can be driven by batteries, mechanically driven, or electrically powered
Connect to ac using nato adaptor or plug

Q

Bonding and grounding

A

Grounding: return path for equipment not mounted to airframe
Bonding: connecting components to metal airframe to eliminate build up of potential difference in static
Static causes fire and radio interference

Q

Static discharge wicks

A

Dissipate static build up
Carbon fibres wrapped together
Ends in a point to encourage discharge into atmosphere
Required on all ifr
Wear out but easily replaced

Q

GNSS

A

6 orbital planes 4 satellite per plane
Triangulates position using coded pings (need at least 4 satellites to be used 5 to choose from and the 6th for timing error)
Must check raim for outages (receiver autonomous integrity m)
Dead reckoning occurs when insufficient satellites are available to fix position

Q

TCAS

A

Traffic alert and collision avoidance system
Ac must be operating in mode c or s
Issues alerts by tracking and interrogating planes to determine collision
TCAS 1 offers traffic warning but no resolution
2 will provide vertical resolution advisory

Q

Avidyne TAS600

A

Seees mode a c and s (position alt clim/descend
Will pick up adsb but does lot read long lat hdg or callsign
Range: 7nm +/- 3500ft
Other traffic open white diamond more than 6nm and 1200 ft
Proximity alert solid white diamond ( closer than OT but not a threat)
Traffic alert solid yellow circle and voice alert (calculated intercept course is within 30 seconds .55 nm and 800ft)
