Light
A form of energy that can be seen.
Model
A representation of something.
Example: a globe is a model of the Earth.
Extension to think about:
How would life be different without electric lights?
People would have to use candles.
That would be a fire risk.
Candles aren’t as bright as electric lights.
People couldn’t do homework or work at night as easily.
Emit
To give off light.
Light source
An object that emits its own light.
Illumination
Light falling on an area
Extension to think about:
What is light pollution and what is its effect on the migratory patterns of animals?
Light pollution is caused by all of the electric lights from cities, homes and streets. Light pollution hides the stars.
Light pollution might confuse migratory animals and cause them to lose their way.
Light beam
Light rays all going in one direction.
Like a flashlight.
Absorb
The way one material takes in another material.
Opaque
Something that does not allow any light to pass through it.
Like a wall.
Translucent
Something that allows some light, but not all to pass through it.
Like frosted glass.
Transparent
Something that allows most light to pass through it.
Like a window.
