Ligands And Complex Ions Flashcards
What is a complex ion?
One or more molecules or negatively charged ions bind to a central metal ion
What is a ligand?
A molecule or ion donates a pair of electrons to a central metal ion to form a coordinate bond ( dative covalent bond)
What is the coordination number?
The number of coordinate bonds attached to the central metal ion
What is a monodentate ligand?
Donates one pair of electrons to the central metal ion to form one coordinate bond
What is bidentate ligand?
Donates two lone pairs of electrons to form two coordinate bonds
What are the two bidentate ligands?
- 1,2 - diaminoethane ( en )
- Ethanedioate ( oxalate ) ion
What is the shape of a complex ion with 6 coordinate bonds?
Octahedral
What is the shape of a complex ion with 4 coordinate bonds?
Tetrahedral or square planar
Which complex ions have the square planar shape?
Transition metals with 8 d-electrons in their highest energy d sub shell
- Pt2+
- Pl2+
- Au3+
