What is a grade I sprain?
Mild and a few fibers are torn
Joint Capsule integrity is maintained
What is a grade II sprain?
Moderate, decreased function
Increased motion at joint but joint may remain stable
What is a grade III sprain?
Complete rupture with loss of joint integrity
Joint is unstable
What are the specific history findings for a sprain?
Caused by passive injury #1 ankle #2 low back
What are the increased risks for a sprain?
Steroid use Muscle weakness RA Previous Injury Ligamentous Laxity
What are some of the physical exam findings for a sprain?
Discrepancies between AROM and PROM and End Feel Weakness against resistance Increased Pain Discoloration, swelling, spasm Joint challenges for abnormal movement
What are the special studies for a sprain?
X-ray (avulsion fx)
MRI
What is the treatment for a sprain?
Ice Compression Cold Laser Ultrasound Rehab
What is the prognosis for a grade I sprain?
2-4 Weeks
What is the prognosis for a grade II sprain?
4-6 Weeks
What is the prognosis for a grade III sprain?
3mo-1 year depending on location of injury
