Modal Verbs: Ability
1 We use the modal verb could to talk about general ability in the past.
Example (past)
I could play the piano when I was younger but I’ve forgotten how to now.
2 We can also use was/were able to for general past ability.
However, when we talk about ability (affirmative) at a specific time or occasion in the past, we use the form was/were able to, not could.
Example (past)
They were able to win the race because they had trained well.
3 The verbs managed to do and succeeded in doing are alternatives for be able to in the past.
Example (past)
They managed to win the race. / They succeeded in winning the race.
modals in the past
Modal Verbs: Obligation, Advice and Permission
1 We use the past verb form had to when we talk about past obligations.
Example (past)
I had to pay for lunch with my credit card.
2 If there is an absence of obligation in the past, we can use these forms: didn’t have to, didn’t need to, needn’t have + past participle.
Example (past)
I didn’t have to pay for lunch but I did.
I didn’t need to pay for lunch but I did.
I needn’t have paid for lunch but I did.
3 When we want to give advice about something that happened in the past, we can use the past modal verb form should have + past participle.
Example (past)
The company should have paid for lunch, not me! I shouldn’t have paid.
4 Finally, to talk about permission in the past, we can use the forms was allowed to or was permitted to.
Example (past)
Were you allowed to go to the lunch? I wasn’t permitted to go.

Modal verbs of deduction
Modal verbs of deduction are used to talk about the probability of past events:
Very Likely: must have + past participle
Possible: may (not) / might (not) / could have + past participle
Very Unlikely: can’t / couldn’t have + past participle
Example (scenario) I can’t find my mobile phone;
I must have forgotten it at home. (It’s almost certain.)
