Lifespan Development Flashcards
What is human development?
study of age-related changes in our bodies, behaviour, emotions, etc.
3 domains of development
Social - relationships with others
Physical - changes to the body (size, shape, characteristics)
Cognitive - thinking, memory, problem-solving
Plasticity
capacity for positive change to the demands of the environment
4 assumptions of lifespan development
-it is ongoing throughout the life course
-it does not follow a single pathway
-it continues simultaneously across multiple domains
-it is a result of the person-in-environment interaction
Types of development change
-ordered change
-stability
-aleatory change
Contextual influences
-normative age-graded
-normative history graded
-non-normative
Ordered change
developmental change occurs in a step-by-step process
-change often linked to age, social role, and developmental task
Stability (no change)
developmental change does not always occur
-aspects of development where lack of change is present
Aleatory change
developmental change can be abrupt and not related to past experiences
-specific events or experiences influence development
