Life Science Test Flashcards
All living things need…(list 5)
Food Water Oxygen Sunlight A habitat
Living things have the ability to…(list 4)
Grow
Move under there own power
Reproduce more of there own kind
Respond to stimuli
Plants are know as what in an ecosystem
Producers
Animals are know as what in an ecosystem
Prey or predators
Life processes…(list 10)
Nutrition Digestion Locomotion Absorption Circulation Exertion Cellular respiration Sensitivity Reproduction Growth
What is a stimulus
Anything that causes an organism to reacts
What is the organization of life…(list 8)
Atom: Hydrogen, oxygen, carbon Molecule: H2O, C12 Organelle: mitochondria, nucleus Cell: cheek cells, yeast, potato cells Tissue: cardiac muscle tissue, skin Organ: bladder, heart, liver, brain, lungs Organ system: respiratory, circulation, digestive Organism: human, yeast
What is the nucules
The brain of the cell, controls movement processes food, contains DNA, and processes reproduction
What is the cell membrane
The outer layer of the cell, it controls what enters and leaves the cell
What is the mitochondria
Produces energy for the cell using oxygen and glucose
What is cytoplasm
A jelly like substance that fills the cell
What is a cell wall
A rigid structure, gives the cell it’s shape, made of starch/cellulose. Located in a fungal and plant cell.
Parts of an animal cell…(list 4)
Mitochondria
Nucleus
Cell membrane
Cytoplasm
Parts of a plant cell…(list 7)
Cell wall Cell membrane Vacuole Chloroplast Nucleus Mitochondria Cytoplasm
Parts of a fungal cell…(list 6)
Cell wall Vacuole Nucleus Cell membrane Mitochondria Cytoplasm
What is a vacuole
A large storage container that stores water and waste. Located in fungal and plant cells.
What is chloroplast
Green structure in witch photosynthesis occurs. Found in plant cells.
Cellular respiration processes…(6 steps)
Oxygen is created by a producer Oxygen enters the cell Glucose enters the cell Oxygen chemically reacts with glucose Stores energy in the glucose is released Energy is released in the form of ATP
What are chromosomes
The structures of DNA in the nucleus.
What is mitosis
The type of reproduction somatic(non-sexual) cells go through.
What happens during the first part of mitosis(interphase)
The chromosomes are copied. Each chromosome becomes two chromatids. A cell spends most of its life in this stage.
What happens during the second part of mitosis(prophase)
Mitosis begins. The cell membrane dissolves. Chromosome condense into rod like structures.
What happens during the third part of mitosis(Metaphase)
The chromosomes line up along the equator of the cell, homologous(the same) chromosome pair up.
What happens during the fourth part of mitosis(anaphase)
The chromatids separate and move to opposite sides of the cell.
What happens during the fifth part of mitosis(telophase)
A nuclear membrane forms around each set of chromosomes, and the chromosomes unwind. Mitosis is complete.
What happens during Cytokinesis
The cell pinches into two individual cells.
What does ATP stand for
Adenosine triphosphate
What does yeast produce while consuming sugar
Carbon dioxide
Yeast is a…
Fungus
How many different species of yeast exist
500
Yeast is what till mixed with water
Dormant
How do yeast reproduce
By mitosis
How much protein does yeast contains
Yeast is 50% protein
Where is yeast found
On plants, animals, skin, soil, and water
Ideal temperature for yeast growth
90° F
Yeast dies at what temperature
100° and over
Order of mitosis
1) Chromosomes are copied. Each chromosome is then two chromatids. A cell spends most of its life in interphase
2) The nuclear membrane dissolves. Chromosome condense into rodlike structures
3) The chromosomes line up along the equator of the cell, homologous chromosome pair up
4) The chromatids separate and move to opposite sides of the cell
5) A nuclear membrane forms around each set of chromosomes, and the chromosomes unwind. Mitosis is complete
6) The cell pinches into two individual cells
What is nutrition
The process of food getting or making
What is digestion
The process were food breaks down into a souble liquid form. Enzymes are the chemicals that make food soluble.
What is locomotion
Moving from place to place under ones power
What is absorption
The movement of soluble through a cell.
What is circulation
The movement of soluble food, oxygen, and waste through a organism.
What is excretion
When a organism gets rid of solid, liquid, and gas waste.
What is sensitivity
When a living organism reacts or responds to stimuli.
