Life Review Flashcards
Eukaryotes
Complex cells with organelles
Ex. Animals, plants, fungus, single celled organisms
Prokaryote
Primitive cells without organelles (no nucleus, etc.), single celled organism
Ex: Bacteria
Cilia
Little hair like structures on the outside of cells that move materials or the cell around
Diffusion
Process of materials moving in and out of the cell without using energy
Active Transport
Process of moving materials in and out of the cell with energy
Homeostasis
The state of having everything balanced and functioning in a living organism
DNA
Deoxyribonucleic acid
A molecule located in the nucleus that is the code of life, very long, stringy molecule, 46 in every human body cell
Chromosome
A structure built of DNA wrapped around protein molecules into tight bundles
CO2
Carbon Dioxide, a waste product
Digestion
The life process or breaking down food into smaller pieces or soluble form
Locomotion
The life process of moving from one place to another under ones own power. Plants do not carry out locomotion
Absorption
The life process in which soluble food is moved through a cell membrane
Circulation
The life process in which soluble food, oxygen and waste is moved through an organism
Excretion
The life process in which all waste, no matter what the form, is removed from the body
Cellular Respiration
The life process in which soluble food and oxygen are combined in a burning process called oxidation. Wastes are then released
