Life Processes Flashcards
6 Life Processes of Living Organisms
Metabolism Responsiveness Movement Growth Differentiation Reproduction
Metabolism
Sum of chemical processes that occur in body, including:
anabolic reactions (break down large, complex molecules into simple, smaller ones)
catabolic reactions (using simple, small molecules to build complex molecules)
Responsiveness
Body’s ability to detect + respond to changes in the environment
Movement
Motion of whole body, individual organs, single cells and organelles
Growth
Increase in body size due to increase in:
- size of existing cells
- number of cells
- amount of material surrounding cells
Differentiation
Process when unspecialized cells become specialized
Specialized cells have different structures and function than unspecialized cells that gave rise to them.
Reproduction
Forming of new cells for growth, repair, replacement OR reproduction of new person
