What is the “general orientation” of a Lary?
A
- diminished sense of taste and smell
- 70% return to work if not already retired
- don’t let them isolate themselves
- not necessarily change in physical activity/sex life
- eating potentially affected
- patient should eat more slowly, take smaller bites
- beneficial to meet other Larys
- address social, physical, emotional aspects
- don’t let them “what if”
- build relationship of trust with patient
- monitor and empathize (not sympathize) Listen, ask ?s

- maintain contact
- help deal with diagnosis
- help them recognize what stage they are in

A
- patient will die if they can’t get past this
- may clinic hop looking for a different answer
- cannot “hear you” (take advice, etc.)

A
- anger at self, may take it out on family, clinician
- comes from fear
- if you don’t react to their anger they will be able to hear what you say

Bargaining
A
- if you do this, I will do that
- they can hear you and much can be accomplished if you bargain with them

- cannot hear you
- difficult to counsel
- hopeless, unmotivated
- consider thyroid gland

A
-develop a positive attitude about the future and moving forward
