What are the 4 fundamental British Values?
- Democracy

What are Moral rights?
What we expect from others in particular situations
For example, parents expect to be contacted by teachers if their son/daughter misbehaves. Its not a legal requirement but its generally expected to happen.
What are Legal rights?
Expectations supported by the law.
For example, the legal right to have a child reasonably educated.
What are Political rights?
Rights that allow individuals to participate freely in the political system.
For example, the right to a fair trial.
What are Human rights?
The fundamental rights that apply to all human beings no matter their nationality, sex, religion or any other status.
For example, the right to freedom of belief/religion
What is Identity?
Who a person is.
What are the factors affecting identity.
- Religion
- Ethnicity
- Socio-economic Status Etc…
What does it mean for a person to have multiple identities?
It means a person takes on different identities at different times and situations.
What is a Diverse Society?
A society with many people from different ethnic backgrounds, culture and tradition.
Benefits of a Diverse Society.
- Innovation
- Promotes Tolerance between different cultures
Challenges of a diverse society.
- Racism and Discrimination.
What is the United Kingdom Comprised of ?
- Britain
- Scotland
- Wales
- Northern Ireland
What is Migration.
People moving from one place to another settling, temporarily or permanently.
[Not necessarily outside the country]
What is Immigration.
Moving Internationally to another country in which you do not have a citizenship etc…
What is the role of the media and the free press?
To investigate and report on issues of public interest
Who regulates the Press in the UK
Independent Press Standards Organisation [IPSO]
What is the United Nations [UN] ?
An international organisation who aims to maintain international peace and security.
What is the UK’s Involvement in the United Nations?
The UK plays a key role in the UN by dealing with economic and social issues, peacekeeping and conflict prevention.
What is North Atlantic Treaty Organisation [NATO] ?
An organisation that guarantees the freedom and security of its members through political and military means.
What is the European Union [EU] ?
A group of 28 countries which exists to promote economic security, peace and stability.
What is the Council of Europe?
An international organisation founded to uphold human rights, democracy and the rule of law in Europe
What is the Commononwealth ?
An association of 56 countries working towards shared goals of prosperity, democracy and peace.
What is the Word trade Organisation?
An organisation that regulates international trade.
Methods used by the UK to resolve international conflicts
- Political settlements
- Offering refuge to those in need of protection
- Provide army etc…
What are Non-Governmental Organisation [NGO’S] and How do they respond to humanitarian crisis?
Organisation that operate independently from governments they respond to humanitarian crisis by aiding people who are suffering.
Example: Salvation Army
Benefits of Democracy.
- Allows citizens for political involvement
- It makes an efficient system for decision making by ensuring that generally everyone’s needs are being met.
Barriers to Citizen participation in a Democracy.
- Can lead to power being distributed to incompetent individuals
- Generally speaking, people vote based on preference rather than on quality
Advantages of joining an interest group or political party etc..?
- Group efforts become usable platforms that facilitate change.
- You can explore new perspectives; rather than viewing only what social media promote
Disadvantages of joining an interest group or political party..?
- Tend to only focus on a single topic
- Can possibly promote harmful ideas/activities
The role of organisations such as; public services, interest groups, pressure groups etc..?
To bring about change in a particular topic/s.
How can people use media to bring about change?
Sharing and promoting work that activist groups are doing, thus raising awareness.
Provide two example of how citizens have brought about change.
