What does “e-media” mean?
Media relating to the internet.
What is traditional media?
Newsprint, radio, TV & cinema.
What is new media?
Non-traditional forms of media.
What is social media?
The way in which people interact with each other on the internet.
What does “mass media” mean?
Means of communicating to a large number of people at the same time.
What are TV stations not allowed to display but newspapers can?
Their political partialness.
What is meant by “free press”?
In order for a free, open & democratic society to exist, press should be free from political & judicial interference & be able to print the stories they wish.
What was the Leveson Inquiry?
Investigation into the press after allegations were made of material acquired for stories was done so by illegally hacking into people’s phones & recording conversations
It was found many celebrities were victims.
What were the findings of the Leveson Inquiry?
Newspaper industry should self-regulate & government shouldn’t interfere.
The Press Complaints Commission (PCC) wasn’t fit for purpose & had to be replaced.
A new body should be established to promote high standards, investigate complaints & impose penalties.
The new body should be established with a new code of conduct.
The new body should be backed by laws designed to ensure that it carried out its work properly.
What was the new regulator set up in 2014?
IPSO, Independent Press Standards Organisation.
