Life Forms Of The Past And The Present Flashcards
Evolution
the change in the heritable characteristics of biological populations over successive generations
the process by which different kinds of living organism are believed to have developed from earlier forms during the history of the earth
Evolution of human
The genus Homo appeared in Africa about 2,2 million years ago. Homo habilis lived in Africa together with australopithecus species. The body of homo habilis was smaller and more ape like than that of australopithecus. They also had a larger brain capacity which enabled them to develop better skills in using their hands to make tools.
Evolution of human: homo erectus
Species that is closer to modern Australopithecus. They had large bodues similar to those of modern humans and lived 1.8 to 0.3 million years ago and were probably the first hominins to migrate from Africa via Europe and asia
Australopithecus
Species that are bipedal primates with both ape like and human kirk characteristics and are often referred to as ape men.
Evolution of human: homo sapiens
Considered 5o be direct ancestors of modern humans. Presumably homosapiens appeared about 200000 years ago.
Sometimes modern humans are referee to as
Homo sapiens sapiens, a subspecies for homo sapiens.
Due to a large brain capacity of about 1 400 cm cubed, modern humans
Have the ability to change their environment to suti their needs unlike early homo species who could not change their environments and therefore became extinct
Some life forms changed very little over millions of years and still look like their ancestors this life forms are known as living fossils. Examples are turtles.
