EVACUATION

A

As it became increasingly more likely that Britain would be going to war preparations were made to move pregnant and women into safer ‘host areas’
Evacuation began on the 1st September 1939
1.5M were evacuated
33,500 were evacuated into the Rhondda Valley

WHAT WERE THE EXPERIENCES OF EVACUEES ?

A

Some children were welcomed and treated like family
Other were taken advantage of for their ration cards and used as unpaid labour
Many children had a better quality of life in the countryside - Removed from poor standards of living in big cities

SIGNIFICANCE OF EVACUATION?

A

Highlighted squalor in London, children came to the countryside with lice and in battered clothes (May have swayed the 1945 election)
Some children had a better standard of living in the countryside
Children traumatised and mistreated
Formed relationships like family
People were forced to take in evacuees
WALES - Lots of children experienced a language barrier and as a result learned Welsh

WOMEN IN THE WORKPLACE

A

1941, drafted in to fill the gaps in industry left by men
Previous to this they were encouraged to continue as housewives
By 1943, 17M women were in the forces or essential work

WOMEN IN HEAVY INDUSTRY

A

Women often worked as engineers in aircraft and munitions factories
They occupied 57% of factory jobs
They did jobs better than men but were paid considerably less
Women made avg 20 more pieces of equipment a day than men
Worked 16 hour days 7 days a week
