3 customs about death?
Unavoidable.
No one dies alone.
Family should come and visit.
Mikveh?
A bath of rainwater for the dead.
What do they do as the person has just died?
Cry into a piece of the dead’s clothing .
Stay beside it, not leave it alone until burial.
Why is it placed it in a plain wooden coffin.
To show everyone is equal.
Kaddish.
Prayers recited when someone died.
What do the family do for the week after the burial?
Stay at home, receive visits from family and friends, pray 3 times a day.
Sheloshim?
The first month after the funeral. When life slowly returns to normal.
What is the thought of jews about the afterlife?
Not as important as life rn. Not much about afterlife in torah, talmud ect.
Two thoughts of what happens, regarding judgement?
Will be judged staright after death by G-D.
The day after the messiah comes G-D will judge everyone.
What is hinted at after life, and where?
Tenkh- Gan Eden.
Gan Eden?
Where all nations will sit at the messianic age.
Sheol
Cleansing of souls.
Where they see the harm they have caused.
Olam ha-ba
The world to come- the messianic age will do this to the world.
Where does the idea of the messiah come from?
A 12th century rabbi who wrote the ‘fundamental principals of jewish faith’ found in the tenakh. 12th principle is the arrival of the messiah.
Meaning of the messiah?
Not God, came from humans.
