What is Reincarnation?
The belief that people are born in another body after they die

People’s spirits living on as spirits of a dead person

What is a soul?
Spiritual, non-physical part of the body in someone
What do Christians believe Heaven is like?
Most Christians believe that Heaven exists in some form. There is not a complete description of it in the Bible
What do Christians believe about Hell?
Many Christians used to believe hell was a physical place but now many believe it to be a situation or state.
People who did not accept Jesus as their saviour and follow his teachings would be sent to hell after hell after death and punished there for eternity. Nowhere in the Bible does it give a detailed description
What is redemption?
Being forgiven for things that you have done wrong. Christians should try to ‘redeem’ themselves from God
What is salvation?
The act of being saved from sin or evil
What parable supports the idea of heaven and hell?
The parable of the sheep and the goats
What usually happens at a Christian funeral?
Prayers - for the dead, for the breaved
Bible readings, a favourite is John 11.17-27
A eulogy (speaking about the deceased)
The commendation - giving the body and soul to God
The committal - lowering the body into the ground or sending the body through a curtain into the cremator
A final blessing on those present at the funeral service
Why was cremation not approved by Christians at first?
Christians believed in resurrection and that the body needs to rot to be resurrected
What is ‘Judgement Day’?
The day when God will judge people on their behaviour in life. A key belief in Islam and some Christian groups
What sometimes happens at Christian funerals?
Hymns are sung, most common is ‘The Lords my Shepard’ (based on Psalm 23)
A sermon is given
Sprinkling the coffin with water
Covering the coffin with a pall
Placing a cross over the coffin
Eucharist or Holy Communion is carried out
Lighting a paschal candle (Ester candle) as a reminder of the ressurection
