South America 1960- religious ideas radicalised the Catholic clergy in defence of peasants and workers, making them see that serving the poor was part of their duty
Why did Liberation theology emerge?
-deepening rural poverty and the growth of urban slums in South America
-human rights abuses, torture and murder during military takeovers in Brazil and Chile
-growing commitment amongst priests to tackle these problems
-priests helped the poor establish support groups , called base communities, and helped workers and peasants fight oppression
-base communities provided education and helped raise awareness of their situation
