father of liberalism - social contract theory - two treaties of government - “where there is no law there is no freedom”

the state should protect those who live in a society, people give up individual freedoms in a society in order to be safely governed. - the government should be limited in that they can be held accountable under the social contact

harm principle - utilitarianism - minimus state involvement and a limited government - wrote “on Liberty”

beloved that the state should be minimus and only get involved when an individuals physical state has been harmed

the ideas of justice - wrote “the theory of justice” - justice theory

argues that those who are succeeding need be left alone but those in need of help should receive it off the state - limited government in the fact that it should not have to get involved unless requested - the state should provide everyone wit the chance of success if they fail in that chance then on their own head be it and they should not receive special treatment

Mary Wollstonecraft

A

quote “the mind has no gender” - wanted liberal equality of individualism - individuals free from government were just rich white men when she was alive in 1700s so she wanted the liberal ideas to extend to women - liberal women are just as good as men and there the state shoal recognise this
