Liana Machado Methods of Testing Flashcards
what is the branch of research that focuses on brain function and brain dysfunction on a cognitive level
Cognitive neuroscience
what is the branch of research that focuses on complex mental processes, such as perception, learning and memory?
cognitive psychology
what is a brain lesion analysis
this is a method of research that aims to uncover how the brain normally functions by investigating the behaviour of a patient with a brain lesion in a specific region.
what does ROI mean
region of interest
What is an EEG and what does it do?
Electroencephalopgraphy - records brain activity with small sensors attached to the scalp, picking up electrical signals produced by the brains activity
what are ERPs
event-related potentials - small voltages in the brain structures that respond to particular events and stimuli.
ERP research considers electrical activity in response to an event in terms of:
- latency
- amplitude and polarity (negative or positive)
- scalp topography
What are two tests of functional brain imaging
- PET
- fMRI
what is a PET scan and what does it do
Positron emission tomography - imaging test of the brain involving radioactive agent to look for brain disease or trauma
what is a fMRI and what does it do
functional magnetic resonance imaging - measures changes in blood flow that occur with brain activity through looking at the brains oxygenated blood levels
what is TMS and what does it do
transcranical magnetic stimulation - procedure uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain. uses big coil to influence brains natural electrical activity.
what are the two categories that neuroimaging falls under
structural and functional imaging
which tests are part of structural imaging
computed tomography (CT)
MRI
diffusion tensor imaging (DTI)
which tests are part of functional imaging
PET
fMRI
what is a DTI test and what does it do
diffusion tensor imaging - provides a view of white matter tracts using an MRI scanner
