Categorical Overextension
Where a child applies a word for something that falls within a ‘category’, but may no be ‘right’ - e.g apple for orange.
Analogical Overextension
Where an uttered word had no relation that has is not clear.
Functional: ‘hat’ - basket on head
Perceptual: ‘tick tock’ for sound of water.
Affective: ‘hot’ for forbidden items.
Mismatch Statements
Word doesn’t match the object - child says ‘mummy’ looking at the door. Due to mum exiting through the door (and object permanence).
Hypernym
A superordinate: a word that is more generic - the umbrella term, e.g clothing.
Hyponym
The more specific words within a hypernym - jeans.
Proto words
An invented word that has a consistent meaning for young babies - ‘food’ ‘da’
Holo phrase
A single word expressing a whole idea - ‘biscuit’ meaning ‘I want food now’.
