What is semantics?
The study of word meanings
What is denotation?
The straightforward, literal meaning of a word, the dictionary definition e.g. spring is the season between winter and summer
What does lexis refer to?
Words- choices of vocabulary
What is connotation?
Refers to all the associations a word has- ideas, emotions and attitudes.
What is low frequency lexis?
Words used less often- may be more sophisticated, unusual choices, perhaps technical
What is high frequency lexis?
Words that are commonly, frequently used, simple choices
What is formal lexis?
More serious, standard English, likely to be planned or written
More likely to be complex/polysyllabic
What is informal lexis?
More relaxed, conversational, perhaps colloquial (language of speech)
More likely to be simple/monosyllabic
What is lexical field or subject-specific lexis?
A group of words with associated/linked meanings or uses
What are synonyms?
Words that share the same/close meaning e.g. Start, begin, commend
Used to avoid repetition
What are antonyms?
Words that have opposite meanings
Start, finish
Old, new
What is literal language?
Words that are used literally to denote their objective meaning
E.g. The river became a torrent. (Literally a rushing stream of water)
What is simple vocabulary?
Simple, monosyllabic words are clear and direct
What is elaborate or elevated vocabulary?
Words that can sounds dramatic and uplifting
What is emotive vocabulary?
Words intended to stir the emotions of the audience
