Basic features of the word
arbitrary, conventional, universal
Arbitrariness
Name of lexeme does not result from the nature of reality it stands for e.g. basic features of table (material,colour) are not reflected in the nature of the word
Conventionality
word is sort of a convention among the members of the particular langiage community
Universality
tendency of a word to denote whole class of objects not just individual object (word table - all kind of tables not just one particular with 4 legs and white wood) ;*
extralinguistic reality
everything that can be expressed language
Lexical motivation
Nature of word cannot be always connected with arbitrariness.
3 different types of lexical motivation:
1. Morphological
2. Semantic
3. Phonetical
Morphological motivation
Determined by structure of some other related words (word worker - linked to work)
Semantic Motivation
has been inspired by the original meaning of an already existing lexeme (word mouse denoting an animal was used to name electronic device because it resembles it)
Phonetical motivation
words are motivated by natural sounds
