the ability to characterize the meaning of words in the relationship they have with other words
SYNONYMY
2+ words that have nearly the exact same meaning
can be used in place of eachother -synonmys
cannot always be used in place of each other

HYPONYMY
meaning of ONE is included in the meaning of ANOTHER ………animal/dog
there is a hierarchy structure with super ordinate
and subordinate levels

individual experience can lead to substantial variation and interpretation
HOMOPHONES
when 2+ different words are written differently but have the same pronunciation………..BEAR/BARE
HOMONYMS
when one for has two unrelated meanings ……….bank of river/institution
POLYSEMY
multiple related meanings with a single lexeme
star……..sky,shape,actor
METONYMY
Substituting a word for another word closely rrlated to it, HE DRANK THE WHOLE BOTTLE……….(of water)
