Morphology
The study of the internal structure of words in a langaugae
Morpheme
Parts of words ; prefix, stem, suffix
FREE morphemes
A single word consisting of a single morpheme;
has potential for independent occurrence
ex. DUCKling FARMer
lexical and functional morphemes are part of free morphemes.
LEXICAL morphemes
Belong to the ‘OPEN’ word class; ‘open’ because new items can be added to it. include NOUNS, VERBS, ADJECTIVES AND ADVERBS

FUNCTIONAL morphemes
Belong to the 'CLOSED' class function of words in english; PREPOSITIONS, CONJUNCTIONS, PRONOUNS AND DETERMINERS ex. and, but, when, if
BOUND morphemes
Cannot stand alone,
typically attached to another form; plurals -s
prefixes -un
suffixes -est
INFLECTIONAL AND DERIVATIONAL are part of bound morphemes
INFLECTIONAL morphemes
Indicate aspects of the GRAMMATICAL FUNCTION of a word
they indicate whether a word is ; -singular/plural
-present/ past tense
-comparative/possesive
form
DERIVATIONAL morphemes
Create new lexical items; through the addidtion of suffixes (-ness, -est) and prefixes (un- , pre-)
