Lewis Structure + Molecular Mass Practice Flashcards

1
Q

How can you easily tell how many bonds an element likes to form when needing to draw a lewis structure?

A

the charge for the group that it is in usually corresponds to how many bonds an elements will form (ex: Hydrogen = +1 = forms 1 bond; O = -2 = forms 2 bonds)

Q

Describe how you would go about drawing a lewis structure

A
  • Identify the total number of valence electrons for the compound
  • Place the least electronegative atom in the center
  • Draw at least one line to each atom (one line = 2 vale-)
  • Find out how many remaining vale- you are working with
  • Place that number of vale- randomly around the atoms
  • move atoms as needed (ex: form double bonds) so that each atom has 8 valence electrons
