Levels Of Prevention Flashcards
Primary prevention
DescriptionAim is to intervene before a disease or problem begins. It aims to reduce the incidence of an illness in the community, and is directed at individuals who are at risk for developing a particular disorder. It can be subdivided into universal, selective, and indicated prevention
Secondary prevention
DescriptionSecondary prevention aims to detect and treat disease that has not yet become symptomatic and therefore to lower the rate of established cases of the disorder. This is achieved through early detection and treatment
Tertiary prevention
Tertiary prevention involves the care of established disease, with attempts made to restore to highest function, minimize the negative effects of disease, and prevent disease-related complications
Universal prevention
DescriptionApplies to everyone in a defined population
Selective prevention
DescriptionApplies to people identified as being at high risk for a condition
Indicated prevention
DescriptionApplies to people with early features of a condition
