Organelles Cell Tissue Organ Organ systems Organism
Organelles
+ The tiny structures found within cells.
+ Can only be seen using a powerful microscope.
e.g. Mitochondria
Cell
+ Organisms are made up of cells.
+ Are like tiny building blocks of life
+ Can be eukaryotic - complex and include all animal/plant cells
+ Can be prokaryotic - smaller/simpler cells (e.g. bacteria)
+ They are specialised to carry out particular functions for defending the body against diseases (e.g. red blood cell & white blood cell)
Tissue
+ A group of similar cells that work together to carry out a particular function.
+ Can contain more than one cell type
e.g. Muscular tissue
e.g. Plants have xylem tissue (for transporting water and mineral salts) and phloem tissue (for transporting sucrose and amino acids)
Organ
+ A group of different tissues that work together to perform a function
e.g. Lungs in mammals
e.g. Leaves on plants
> They are both made up of several different tissue types
Organ Systems
+ Groups of organs that work together to carry out a function
+ Each system does a different job
e.g. In mammals the digestive system is made up of organs including the stomach, intestines, pancreas and liver.
Organism
+ Complete living thing made up of many organ systems
+ Characterised by MRS H GREN
+ Some consist of a single cell
+ Some are multicellular – they contain lots of cells
