levels of measurement Flashcards
categorical variable
data falls into separate categories
measured variables
data measured on a scale of some kind, indiciating direction and relative position
discrete variable
limited values, no real values between adjacent values
continuous variable
infinite number of possible values on scale
what are the four levels of measurement
ratio
interval
ordinal
nominal
what do levels of measurement inform us
which descriptive and inferential statistics to use
nominal level
data identified only by name, data falls into named categories
ordinal level
data in relative order, or rank on a scale
interval level
have equal intervals between values, but arbitrary zero point
ratio level
equal intervals between value and absolute zero point
re-coding
reducing data from higher to lower levels
