experimental method Flashcards
what is the purpose of experiments
to test hypotheses and theories
to identify a cause and effect relationship
what are independent variables
variables that are manipulated (changed)
what are dependent variables
variables that we measure
what are extraneous variables
variables besides the independent variable that affect the dependent variable
what are random variables
variables that affect all participants but unpredictably
what are confounding variables
variables that change systematically with the IV
what is the experimental hypotheses
hypothesis that states the cause and effect relationship between the IV and DV
how do we operationalise variables
define the IV and define how the DV is measured
what does a null hypothesis state
that there will be no difference in the results between each level of the IV
independent groups design
each group take part in one condition of the study
repeated measures design
all participants take part in all conditions of the study
matched pairs design
participants matched on important variables then allocated to one condition
experimenter expectancy effects
effects caused by what the experimenter expects or wants
participant effects
participants changing behaviour because they are being studied
demand characteristics
cues conveying the experimental hypothesis, causing participants to behave in a certain way
