Levels of Measurement Flashcards
What is level of measurement?
It refers to the nature of the data (variables) that you are collecting/ using within your research
What does the level of measurement affect?
The statistical test you choose.
The graph you choose
What are the levels of measurement?
Nominal
Ordinal
Interval
Ratio(NOT ON SPEC)
Nominal
Named Categories
Basic form of data
Often display in a bar chart
Ordinal
Ordered Data
cannot understand the measurement but can understand the relationship
(e.g in a race we can’t measure how fast 1st place was but we do know that 1st place was faster than 2nd place)
Interval
Form of measurement
True mathematical values
Can also understand the relationship between data
(e.g the difference between 165cm and 175cm is 10cm which is the same difference between 102cm and 112cm.)
