Kenning
A figurative expression that replaces a name or a noun. Often it is a compound of two words and the words are hyphenated
ex. Rain shower = rain
Synecdoche
A figure of speech in which a part is made to represent the whole or vice versa.
ex. All hands on deck! (meaning that everyone needs to help)
Allusion
An expression designed to call something to mind without mentioning it explicitly.
ex.He is like Superman!
Symbolism
An object, person, or situation has another meaning other than its literal meaning.
ex. Heart = not only represents a part of the body, but also represents love.
Stream of Consciousness
A character’s thoughts, feelings, and reactions are depicted in a continuous flow uninterrupted by anything.
ex. Then I thought to myself, “maybe I should wear my jacket outside…”
